Pill cancer: Early studies show if it really works or not

With the recent popularization of phosphoethanolamine as a way to treat cancer, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) funded and subsequently met five studies on the drug's action. The aim was to assess the safety and efficacy of which is already known as "cancer pill." The following is what they found.

Pill cancer: what is it?

The phosphoethanolamine was initially studied at USP by Professor Gilberto Orivaldo Chierice that, according to the institution, began to research it independently, since the university has not taken ownership of the studies carried out by him.

By the year 2014, phosphoethanolamine capsules were distributed at the Chemistry Institute of USP in São Carlos (São Paulo), but the situation changed after that justice has banned this practice.

The decision was due to the absence of scientific studies which would conclusively prove the drug's efficacy and their safety, that is, do not know if she really fighting cancer or if she had no other health risks.

Phosphoethanolamine really work?

The reports ordered by MCTI evaluated the effect of the substance by tissue samples, or worked in the laboratory cells. The researchers came to the following conclusions:

Concentration phosphoethanolamine

According to the product label information, each capsule contain 500 mg of synthetic phosphoethanolamine. But the evaluators found something different. According to the findings, the weight of the contents of each capsule ranges from 233 mg to 368 mg.

The amount of drug in each phosphoethanolamine unit does not beat with the package information phosphoethanolamine corresponded to only 32.2% of the total. The remainder of the mixture consisting of monoethanolamine was protonated (18.2%), fosfobietanolamina (3.9%) and other components like iron, zinc, and manganese.

Action against cancer

The results showed that only monoethanolamine showed cytotoxic and antiproliferative activity, i.e., was able to arrest the growth of cancer. However, the action, in the final report, it is much less potent than that of Cisplatin Gemcitabine and together drugs that are already used for cancer treatment.

The phosphoethanolamine and fosfobisetanolamina showed no activity against cancer.

For now you can not say that phosphoethanolamine is a suitable treatment for cancer
Safety

The final report showed that a single dose of 5000 mg / kg orally or repeated doses (each 1000 mg / kg) for 7 days showed no indications of toxicity, which may indicate that the drug is not dangerous to health.

Anticancer pill: what are the next steps

While giving evidence about the actual action of phosphoethanolamine in cancer and the safety of its use, the current findings are not sufficient to determine definitively whether the phosphoethanolamine will become or not a drug to treat cancer.

One of the reports to the MCTI suggests that in vivo tests are performed, ie, people or animals, to determine how the substance behaves when influenced by metabolism.

In addition, only long-term studies will be able to say what the effects of long-term phosphoethanolamine and if it has, in fact, an impact on patient survival.
